ABOUT THE CAMP

Importance of Active and Healthy Lifestyle

It is estimated that one in three Canadian families cannot afford to enroll their children in sport or recreation activities (Vision Critical 2011). Only 5% of kids, in general, are meeting the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines of at least 60 minutes of daily moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity for Children and Youth. This percentage is even much lower among kids from low-income families.

Obesity is one of the most pressing health threats facing children and families today. Current estimates show that more than 22.6% of Quebec children between aged 2 to 17 are overweight or obese. Obese children are at higher lifetime risk for heart disease, stroke, asthma and some forms of cancer. They also are being diagnosed with conditions previously considered adult illnesses, such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Children and teens from low-income communities and ethnic minorities are especially vulnerable to obesity.

The key prevention of the health problems is active and healthy lifestyle.

Solaris Centre/Apex Summer Program

Centre Solaris has developed and is in the process of implementing a program that allows kids from low-income families from Montreal to participate in sports and recreational activities in a sports day camp during 4 weeks from July 18st to August 12th. Centre Solaris will select kids between 6 – 14 years old from a low-income family based on the proof of the family income (e.g. social assistance/welfare slip/pay cheque slip). The kids will be subdivided into sub-groups based on their age brackets and each group will have a dedicated sports instructor/supervisor. The weekly camp session will last full 5 business days Monday to Friday and will be totally free for the kids.

At the summer camp, every day starts with an hour-long martial arts class. We fill the rest of their mornings with team sports, yoga, outdoor activities, countless self-defense and martial arts themed games, all in an effort to keep our campers as physically active as possible. Typically, through swimming lessons, painting courses, critical thinking exercises and daily challenges, we spend the afternoons building life-skills and core values.

Not only do we provide nutritious, home-cooked meals, but also we educate the campers on healthy eating. Between experience at our on-site organic strawberry farm, trips to local markets, and even an “educational” excursion to a chocolate factory, we hope to help establish a life-long appreciation of proper nutrition.

Expected Outcome and Impact of the Program

The outcomes of the program are: under-privileged kids from low-income families will increase confidence to play sport and/or be physically active, improve fundamental movement skills, and develop healthy and active life habits.

Impact Measures and Reporting

We will measure the impact of the program by counting the number of participants from low-income families. Centre Solaris will follow up with the participants after the camp to encourage them to continue to participate in sports and will provide support in getting funding to pay registration fees from such organizations as Jumpstart Canadian Tire Foundation and Sports for Kids Canada. Number of kids continuing sports activities after camp will also demonstrate the impact of the program. All participants, activities, hours of work, and engaged resources will be duly logged and documented. Reports on the outcome of the program and on the community impact will be provided to all our partners, donors, and supporters in the end of the program.

Acknowledgement of Your Support

Your organization will be mentioned as our donor on all our printed materials and our social media and social media on some of our partner organizations. Also, the family of the participants will be sent thank you letters in the end of the program with a list of all donors with an acknowledgement of the support.
